How a NOTORIA Metal Bed Is Made – Handcrafted Steel

Go behind the scenes at NOTORIA: Discover how a handcrafted metal bed is created from S235 steel – from the first design idea and manual welding to powder coating and custom configuration in size, colour and fabric. Built to last for decades and fully recyclable.

How a handcrafted NOTORIA metal bed is made: A look behind the scenes

Imagine lying in a bed that's not just stable and stylish, but a true one-of-a-kind piece – handcrafted from premium steel that lasts decades without anything breaking. At NOTORIA, it takes 2–3 months for a new metal bed design to go online because pure craftsmanship comes first. This article takes you on the journey of a NOTORIA metal bed from the first sketch to your bedroom.

The birth of an idea: Design with Kalina Francke

Every NOTORIA metal bed starts with the creativity of designer Kalina Francke. Influenced by customer requests, like a loft dweller needing more storage, or trends like Industrial Chic, she sketches the design. In consultation with the production manager, decisions are made: Which tube dimensions fit? S235 steel with 2 mm wall thickness provides the perfect balance of lightness and robustness.

Real needs flow in here – for couples over 25 living in houses or apartments with budgets from €700–2000. Kalina focuses on adaptability: Standard sizes from 90x200 cm to 180x200 cm, often combined with wood elements for warmth in every style, from minimalism to vintage.

Material selection: Quality from EU steelworks

Only the best steel is used – S235 from European mills, in various tube sizes depending on the design, always 2 mm thick for durability. For over 20 years, even before NOTORIA was founded, the constructions have been based on proven principles: repairable, sustainable and free from mass production.

Sustainability is core: Regional suppliers minimize CO2, offcuts are recycled, and the steel is 100% recyclable. No cheap steel from the Far East – instead material that withstands 350 kg load without creaking. The robust construction with double screw connections and precise weld seams ensures nothing can break – ideal as a family heirloom.

  • Advantages of S235 steel: High strength, corrosion-resistant after coating and easy to weld.
  • Tubes and profiles: Square tubes for slim frames, thicker ones for solid headboards – flexible per model.

Handcrafted prototype production: Pure welding

Pure handcraft – no assembly line! Steel is precisely cut, elements joined by MIG/MAG welding. Sparks fly as the welder sets seams that are later ground smooth: safe, smooth and touch-friendly.

The prototype stands: It's loaded, assembled and critically examined. Kalina Francke checks – does the look fit? Is it stable? Improvements follow until perfection is achieved. Double screw connections provide extra hold; every bed supports mattresses up to 350 kg and remains intact for life.

Fun fact: In the workshop it smells of metal and welding powder – a moment that makes indestructibility tangible.

Surface finishing: Powder coating for the perfect finish

Approved? Off to the paint shop! Powder coating in semi-matt, matt or structure-matt protects against rust and gives the noble Industrial look. Electrostatic application and baking – scratch-resistant and environmentally friendly without solvents.

This layer makes NOTORIA beds unique: No fading, easy cleaning. Change color after years or refresh after decades? Simply take it to a local paint shop – the coating can be easily renewed. Colors? Classic black, trend white or custom shades – always durable.

Quality control and customization

Every bed goes through checks: Screws double, seams flawless, stability tested. Decades-long construction method guarantees reliability – nothing can break, perfect for passing on to the next generation.

Customization is a core piece at NOTORIA: Custom-made in any desired size, matching slatted frames and wood combinations for perfect fit. Whether unusual dimensions for an old building bedroom or special adaptations – we manufacture exactly to your wishes. Sustainable because the bed can be used for decades: Can be color-refreshed when needed and fully recycled at the end of its life cycle – instead of buying new.
